Repairs
This page is now out of date and no longer maintained. I keep it here purely for reference purposes.
If you want more information about repairing laptops, or Linux on laptops try TuxMobil or Repair4Laptop.
If you look at my B2154 repairs page you will see plenty of instructions for a variety of things. This is because I ran my B2154 for 5 years. It had been through 3rd world customs, used in Jungle camps, with every power supply known to mankind, on every continent and I even found time to do some work on it. This meant that it broke down lots; hence how I knew so much. I've had my CF48 for a few weeks, hence the only thing I know how to repair so far is the CDROM (died on day 1), I'm sure though over the next few years I shall add extensively to this page.
All work where the laptop cover is removed should be done with the mains and the battery disconnected. Do not replace/ install/ connect either until the case is completely closed and your work complete.
Please remember I am not an expert, all work you carry out is at your own risk (that includes damage to yourself/ others/ property etc) and just because I didn't kill myself doing this doesn't mean you won't. Now that's over I hope you find this page of help.
CDROM Drive Replacemnt
The replacement of the CDROM drive is very simple, as long as you know which tiny screws to undo. I found out the following after 3 hours of fighting with the case.
The CDROM drive itself is a standard modular unit, I've included photos below, the replacement I used came out of a unbadged clone laptop.
Remove the Hard Disk cover and lift the drive out and back (this will allow you access to the space without having to remove the drive. Under the hard disk are 2 screws, these are the only things holding the CDROM drive in, remove them and with some slight pressure from the rear the drive will come out. Installation of your new CDROM drive is the reverse of removal.
